Visit to a Small Planet

Written in the late 1950s by Gore Vidal, this play conjures up images of vintage sci-fi: Forbidden, The Day the Earth Stood Still, and My Favorite Martian.

Over the summer, Turner Classic Movies aired a ton of sci-fi movies: Them!, The Blob, Tarantula, The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms … I tried to catch the opening credits of as many as possible to see how the titles were crafted, ultimately watching several in their entirety. I was struck by how plain the majority of the credits were, unlike the posters. (And that leads to one of my pet peeves: unity of materials.)
The backdrop is a composite shot of stars and the Earth. No need to blend them seamlessly, as it helps with the 50’s sci-fi look; as it was rare when those shots were composed seamlessly. And after several embarrassingly disastrous drafts, I finally decided not to get too weirded out with the text. A clean, heavy – but not too heavy – block text more than suffices. There’s also a little hint of a shadow to help the text float in space, not that it’s not already, but just to set it off a wee bit more. It’s conservatively bold.

The fall colors are already a great deal better than last year, so I'll be posting some fall foliage in the coming weeks.
