Never have I been so sure of what a graphic should like.
Doing something with it, in this instance, well, that’s another story.
I knew the graphic should be a mosaic of the participating
artists made to look like the state of Missouri.
I found a decent outline map online and made it into a “stencil.” After
arranging the artist submitted photos, I put the stencil over the pics, merged
the two layers, deleted the color of the stencil, and voila!
Now what to do with it.
I like using a single image as the backdrop; a canvas to
place text upon. Given the irregular shape (Colorado would’ve been sooooo easy to work
with.), I could not do that. The question then became how much white space?
Another piece of the puzzle was listing all of the artists committed to the exhibit. Putting the latter at the bottom is a fine solution. Adding two horizontal
bars to help delineate the space still keeps things open, but they’re not as
confining as a solid border on all four sides. Almost like the ends of a
scroll.
The Best of The Best of Missouri Hands is a bit of a jawbreaker when you type it out, but using one of their logos helps with that. Putting the BOMH logo in the upper right curve of the state helps balance out the graphics.
Another route I almost went down was putting the pics in the form of a candy sampler, and calling the exhibit Sample the Best of Missouri Hands. Perhaps a little too cute, but I may work it up just to see what happens.
